Barking Gecko presents Aesop and His Fables

posted Wednesday, 1 Sep

This October school holidays Barking Gecko presents the classic tale of tales (or tails if you like), Aesop and His Fables by Ingle Knight. Directed by Perth’s hottest upcoming director, Marisa Garreffa, audiences can expect the ancient moral fables transformed for the modern stage with more than a few lessons learned on the way.

Aesop - a semi-legendary Greek writer, was the author of hundreds of fables. He was once a slave, but when he was eventually freed, he travelled extensively as an oral-storyteller – back then, reading was only enjoyed by the privileged few and theatre had only just begun... Aesop’s fables usually involve animals, and each story was written with the intention of teaching a moral, that is to “teach people about people.” (Aesop).

Writer Ingle Knight, who loved Aesop’s Fables as a child, decided to put a unique twist on the play,

“Rather than having Aesop tell stories about animals, I thought it would be interesting to have the animals tell the story of Aesop.”

The result is a hilarious look at storytelling through the eyes of three very human animals, who run a travelling theatre company.

Aesop and His Fables was first produced by Barking Gecko Theatre Company in 2002, and was
enjoyed by audiences across Australia. The original set, designed by Lou Westbury, is a minuture
version of a real proscenium-arch theatre and has been refreshed and modernised to fit in with director
Marisa Garreffa’s interpretation of the play.

A series of interviews with Marisa will take children and their families behind the scenes of Aesop and His Fables. Released through YouTube and barkinggecko.com.au this is an excellent insight into the story telling process of a director.

Inspire your children’s creativity and imagination by bringing your family to Aesop and His Fables this
school holidays.
