An Enemy of the People

"Pensive? Damn, I was going for thoughtful."

Power. Money. Morality. In a tight-knit community a shocking discovery comes to light and threatens the lifeblood of the town.

Truth and honour are pitched against wild ambition and corruption in Ibsen’s emotional maelstrom as ActNow Theatre for Social Change, together with Sean Riley present An Enemy of The People at the Ayers House Museum from Wednesday August 11th to Saturday August 21st 2010.

The plot centres on Dr Stockmann, who discovers water contamination in the Town’s newly built public baths (which have caused a great boom in the town’s economy). Fearing outbreaks of typhoid and gastric fever, he writes an article to the independent press to make his finding public. However, after pressure from his brother - the town Mayor – the townspeople become swayed by economic rationalism and self-interest.

Presented in historic Ayers House Museum, An Enemy of The People emphasises the struggles individuals have faced, are facing and will face in the ongoing fight between human wellbeing and material gain.

An Enemy of The People speaks truths about countless situations across Australia where regional towns are based upon an industry which is poisoning its local citizens," says ActNow Theatre for Social Change Artistic Director Edwin Kemp Attrill.

"On a global level, Enemy reenergises themes from the original text in a world where climate change has sparked widespread concern, but economic rationalism still prevents us from addressing our key environmental issues - which are now an urgent matter of survival. This production moves the story into the 21st century where we face new challenges that relate back to age-old questions.”

An Enemy of The People features the talents of Edwin Kemp Attrill (Director); Gemma Sneddon (Assistant Director); Sean Riley (Co-Producer/Mentor); Rory Chenworth (Composer); Kate Moore (Designer); and Guy O’Grady, Sarah Dunn, Kurt Murray, Catherine Story, Felix Kneebone, Nicolas Cutts, Loki Ree Macnicol, Ailsa Dunlop and Alexander Ramsay (Actors).

ActNow Theatre for Social Change & Sean Riley present Ibsen’s An Enemy Of The People - a version by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, at Ayers House Museum (288 North Terrace, Adelaide) from August 11-21.
