Award winning street performance ensemble to visit SA Riverland

posted Wednesday, 1 Dec

Award-winning physical theatre ensemble Born in a Taxi will be teaming up with Riverland Youth Theatre these school holidays, delivering a bunch of street performance workshops for ages 13 and over throughout January.

"The Riverland is an outdoor activities region and our social calendars are spotted with markets, field days, parades and sporting events. The Street Ensemble is a chance to take arts into the streets and community events with fun, ironic, quirky and satirical performances," said Olivia Allen, RYT's Artistic Director.

Born in a Taxi is an independent physical theatre ensemble established in Melbourne in 1989 that has been creating physical, visual, and street theatre for over 20 years.

Over that time Born in a Taxi has produced many unique, award-winning performances in theatres, on the street, at arts festivals, in galleries, stadiums, rubbish bins and all manner of corporate venues and public events, including developing over fifteen street acts and out-door shows. These include performances at both WOMADelaide and the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

Since its inception, Born in a Taxi has completed six European street theatre tours, and performed in Korea, Singapore, Japan and New Zealand.

"The street performance workshops will offer new insights into creating with a group, developing theatrical clarity and performance confidence, and will provide participants the tools to create and form their own ideas," stated Allen.

The one-week holiday workshop intensive will be held January 17-21. There are a limited number of places available so please call the friendly folk at RYT on (08) 8586 3437 and book your place.

RYT programs and activities are assisted by the South Australian Government through Carclew Youth Arts. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body, and is also supported through the Australian Government and Country Arts SA through the Regional Arts Fund.
