“It was simmery-summery sizzlingly hot
A splendiferous day
To see what we'd spot!
Our neighbours looked on
From over the gate,
Curious to see their junk they did hate...
At last it was finished, our great pride and joy…
Our recycled, remodeled, re-useful toy!”

Canberra Youth Theatre will be welcoming Children’s Book author, Nikki Slade-Robinson, who is travelling to Canberra from New Zealand to see CYT’s World Premiere production of her environmental story, THAT’S NOT JUNK!

Canberra Youth Theatre’s delightful adaptation of Slade-Robinson’s story is about a family with a unique imagination who set off about the neighbourhood, looking for what other people throw out as junk, to make a very special creation for all the kids on the street!

With the collaborative efforts of director, barb barnett and a cast of 13 young actors aged 7 – 12yrs, THAT’S NOT JUNK has been transformed into an exciting promenade travelling performance through the grounds of Floriade - free for all families to enjoy.

A great book - told in rhyme, THAT’S NOT JUNK grew out of the author's fond childhood memories of visits to the dump! Without being preachy, earnest or depressing about junk and waste, That’s Not Junk depicts conservation and recycling in a jolly way and will hopefully inspire children, families and audiences to fire up their fertile imaginations and save the environment!

CYT’s emerging designers, Ara Steel and Megan Bockwinkel have worked with the young cast to recreate a winding neighbourhood amongst the trees! Blending a variety of performance techniques, found objects and recycled materials, the dynamic team of barnett, Steel and Bockwinkel have translated this story into a unique and surprising performance for the audiences at Floriade. Don’t miss this World Premiere performance!
