Carclew Youth Arts has been running a highly successful and competitive arts administration program since 1994. This program provides invaluable training and employment opportunities for young South Australians ready to break into professional arts management. Trainees are seconded to different arts and cultural organisations across the state for twelve months where they gain on-the-job training and complete a nationally recognised Certificate III (Business Administration).
This year, the Carclew traineeship program proved its popularity once again with over 600 applicants vying for ten positions. The 2010 trainees were appointed in early March and, after the initial three-day training session with CAN SA (Community Arts Network South Australia), they commenced their positions in various South Australian organisations.
Tara Lynch commenced her traineeship in marketing and events at Carclew Youth Arts. Monica Bachmeyer will be fulfilling her traineeship as the office co-ordinator position at Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre. Chloe Wagemaker is the new marketing and reception trainee at the JamFactory, Australians leading Centre for Craft and Design.
Woonan Willoughby is based at one of Australia’s premier centres for Aboriginal and Torres Straight performing arts, Kurruru Youth Performing Arts. Jane Howard will be completing her traineeship at the Media Resource Centre, an organisation dedicated to supporting local filmmakers. Laura Haigh’s traineeship is based at the Port Adelaide Visitor Information Centre and Port Adelaide Enfield Civic Centre, where she will be working on local council event planning and management of local public art and community projects. Michelle Keech will be working at Unley City Council.
Shaylee Leach is going assist in the promotion of youth performing arts in the Riverland at Riverland Youth Theatre. Sarah Dunn is based in Port Adelaide at Vitalstatistix Theatre Company and Crystal Burgan is working at Ausdance, Australia’s Professional dance advocacy organisation.
Since its commencement 16 years ago, Carclew’s arts administration traineeship program placed over 130 young people in trainee positions in more 35 individual arts and cultural work sites in both metropolitan and regional South Australia, with many trainees going on to become key arts and cultural leaders.
The traineeships will commence again in early 2011. All positions are advertised on the South Australian Government Notice of Vacancies website.
