If you’ve experienced family drama (and let's be honest - who hasn't?), you’ll appreciate the mother/daughter battle for supremacy, Mummy Loves You Betty Ann Jewel, at The Blue Room Theatre, 14 April – 1 May.
Originally titled Hitler Had a Mummy Too, Australian playwright Suzanne Hawley’s darkly comic musical asks the brutal question ‘Are we destined to become our parents?’, dissecting everything from tantrums to tears, and discipline to death threats(!).
Local producer Simone Ruggiero says this is part of the play’s appeal.
“Its honesty. In portraying both the truth and treachery of mother/daughter relationships, allowing you to really connect with the characters”.
For Mummy (Jenny McCann) and Betty (Whitney Richards), it’s not all hugs and heart?shaped chocolates as Hollywood would have us aspire to. The two leading ladies boisterously demand attention as they invite you to take a seat and take sides.
McCann (Shift Swapping) and Richards (2009 PTT/EGAA Best Newcomer nominee, Apocalypse Perth) have worked closely with director Sarah Fay to create a fresh interpretation of this poignant 80s play ? including original music by Steve Hearne ? for The Blue Room Theatre’s 21st birthday year.
Emerging company Aleela Creatives is excited to be making its debut in The Blue Room Theatre's Old Enough… season with what Fay describes as:
“A hilarious play that is sure to leave you clutching your sides, wondering why you haven’t phoned your own Mum recently!”.
