The Blue Room Theatre and Ladyfinger present the world premiere of No Door on her Mouth - a lyrical amputation this October and November.
Passing back and forth across multiple thresholds she is falling through a thousand openings. Spaces enfold - unfold within her waiting. Muted, she is holding the weight of all sadnesses. Dissolving and resolving she falls too often, hesitates too long, clings too hard. Until the returning inhalation reveals the intimate kernel of diva voce and she gives audience to herself.
Using her signature blend of tragedy and comedy, Dawn Albinger utilises fragmented narrative, lyrical and poetic text and a healthy dose of humour to deconstruct stereotypical western notions of "romance", "femininity", "desire" and "love" in this intimate solo performance.
Described as a 'lyrical amputation', No Door On Her Mouth invokes choking divas, handless maidens and flightless women, celebrating the juiciness of the mature female imaginary and getting to the heart of the matter in ways that are at once inspired and awkwardly (in)articulate.
If faffy Jennifer Aniston rom-coms leave you feeling empty, this complex examination of "falling in love" should satiate your tastebuds, as Albinger explores the spaces between love and resistance, thought and agency, voice and breath.
The piece is a philosophical answer and performative response to Irigaray’s question of how to say “I love you” without it meaning “I wonder if I am loved”. It has been developed as the practical component of a Contemporary Performance Phd at Edith Cowan University, through a collaboration between Dawn Albinger (writer/performer), Margaret Cameron (collaborative director and dramaturg) and Sam James (video artist).
