If you hadn’t heard the word on the street, here’s the story Morning Glory: Lowdown has teamed up with The Adelaide Fringe Youth Engagement Program (YEP). It’s a match made in Heaven! Lowdown is dedicated in supporting the performing arts for, by and with young people and the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2011 is the perfect platform.
The aim of YEP is to promote suitable Adelaide Fringe events to schools, education providers and youth community organisations. There are 118 shows involved in YEP, all focused on bringing the young people of Adelaide into the Fringe experience.
At Lowdown, we’ve put together a team of suitably Fringe-tastic writers and bloggers who will be attending shows from the program. Lowdown will publish reviews on YEP shows and will open the reviews for public comment; it’s not just limited to Lowdown subscribers. You can also leave comments on blogs. Don’t be shy, let’s get some dialogue going!
The critical thinking behind these reviews and blogs are to evaluate the shows on the YEP list and discuss why they are in the program.
What makes a youth show?
Who can critique these shows and
What defines them as “youth”?
Meet our team!
We have gathered 7 talented SA writers who are prepped and prepared to dive in to this foray, media passes in hand. In our talented collection, we have:
Ben Mylius: a young writer based in Adelaide, with an interest in Earth Jurisprudence and Performatism. When he’s not studying towards his LLB/BA, he’s working on a feature screenplay and a novel.
Jane Howard: a freelance arts writer and critic based in Adelaide. She completed her Bachelor of Science in 2009 and Arts Administration Traineeship in 2010, and currently works for the Media Resource Centre and Flinders University's AusStage Project. Her work can be read on No Plain Jane,
Mhairi McIntyre: recently completed her Honours in Creative Writing at Flinders University and will soon be packing her bags for a PhD at Deakin, Melbourne. Until then, she enjoys spending her time volunteering at Lowdown so she can get her paws on opportunities like reviewing shows for the Fringe. See Mhairi"s review of Skip Millers Hit Songs
glen r. johns has recently fulfilled a lifelong ambition and run away to the circus. Rather than be in the middle of the three rings though, he juggles a myriad of roles as General Manager at Cirkidz, balancing books and tumbling between gigs and grant applications. In addition to this he still reads, writes, edits films, creates work and attends as wide a range of performances as possible - but with especial focus on those created by and for young people.
Jacquie Lee has recently completed a Media/Arts double degree at the University of Adelaide, and in 2010 was ecstatic to swap her hospitality gig for the world of online publishing as Lowdown’s South Australian News Editor. She enjoys coffee, second-hand bookshops and talking to strangers.
Rachel Hamilton: is completing her postgraduate degree in Theatre for Youth at Arizona State University with an internship with the COME OUT Festival 2011. View Rachel Hamilton 's Blog »
