Moth comes to Sydney

posted Thursday, 1 Jul

Arena Theatre's Moth will be presented at the Sydney Opera House Studio in late July as part of the House:Ed program.

The play's protagonist, Sebastian, is a terminally unpopular 15-year-old suburban boy, with an overactive imagination and an obsession with anime and death. His only friend, Claryssa, is an emo Wiccan art-freak, barely one rung higher than Sebastian on the social ladder.

What starts as just another night drinking down at the cricket nets soon gives way to an ecstatic vision that leaves Sebastian unconscious and Claryssa missing without explanation. Sebastian wakes with a mysterious moth in a jar by his bed, a burning passion to save the souls of all humankind and a desperate need to reach Claryssa. He spirals into a breathless ride of schizophrenic delusion and religious passion, living life at a feverish pitch that can only lead to tragedy.

Themes of mental illness, religious zeal and love are explored in a highly charged, rapid-fire, funny and moving production that comes with a caution of coarse language and sexual themes.

The production is aimed at school students in Years 10-12 but tickets are also available to the general public.

Moth, and Arena Theatre and Malthouse Commission is at The Studio, 20-23 July.

Duration: 75 minutes plus Q&A.

To book pone the box office on (02) 9250 7777 or visit the House:Ed website.
