Opera Queensland's Hansel and Gretel

posted Tuesday, 28 Jul

Opera Queensland’s children’s production of Hansel and Gretel enters its third touring year. To date, over 41,500 students have seen this enchanting chamber opera, based on the classic fable by the brothers Grimm.

Between August and November, the production will tour throughout Queensland (in Term 4) and northern New South Wales (in Term 3). It will be performed in schools in the Brisbane metropolitan area, Mackay, Bowen, Ayr, Townsville, Collinsville, Charters Towers, Ingham and Cairns and regional New South Wales.

Hansel and Gretel is a 50–minute chamber opera version of Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairytale opera of the same name. This adaptation was especially written for young people (Years P–8) by Tim Sexton and Ian Bone.

Through music and voice, the production introduces young audiences to the magic of theatrical storytelling and gives them a positive experience of an art form that is likely to be new to them. The ten minute question and answer session following each performance gives students the opportunity to interact with the artists.

Hansel and Gretel is a fully staged opera with sets and costumes, with the artists performing to live piano accompaniment.
