Are young people are leading a demand for change in the arts?

The launch of the paper coincided with forums that were scheduled across Australia. Talented young artists and theatre workers met to debate new generational perspectives on theatre with the co-authors of a provocative new essay.

The What If? Debates, in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth launched Platform Paper from Currency House.

Not just an audience: Young people transforming our theatre explored how young people are no longer prepared to be passive participants and want a voice in the decision-making. Young people are vital to the health of the theatre, their imagination is fearless and their networks can make or break a performance.

The What If? Debates asked:

  • What if ….the professional theatre community lets go of the outmoded idea that young people’s work is only a stepping stone to the serious stuff of a national theatre industry?
  • What if …the theatre sector acknowledges the ways in which youth arts practitioners have already cultivated the networks and collaborations that it struggles to achieve?
  • What if …young people were brought in on the act of transforming Australian theatre?
