Poetry comes alive for Victorian kiddies

"It's alive!!!" Poetry Alive! that is.

posted Monday, 1 Mar

From 27 April to 14 May, Regional Arts Victoria’s program for young people, arts2GO, will be teaming up with the Song Room to present Poetry Alive! - an hilarious exploration of riddle and rhyme by Complete Works Theatre Company.

The tour will cover areas as diverse as Murrayville, Ballarat, Wedderburn and metropolitan Melbourne and aims to reach over 3,500 young people from Prep to Year 6.

Poetry Alive! incorporates much loved material including Jabberwocky, Mulga Bill’s Bicycle and excerpts from Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes series. In essence, linguistic acrobatics and physical madness abound in an energetic program of performance poetry and song from Australia and around the world.

The program is specifically designed to excite primary students about the world of language and the limitless creativity of the imagination. The talented actors of Complete Works Theatre Company are coupled with the percussive brilliance of Circus Oz musical director, Chris Lewis in a performance that directly involves students in the storytelling and offers an array of possibilities for the creation of their own poems and stories.

Complete Works Theatre Company was formed in 1999 and, in consultation with teachers, students and arts professionals, continues to adapt and develop programs to ensure it remains a relevant and practical resource for student learning.

Regional Arts Victoria, through arts2GO, is committed to engaging Victorian children and young people with the arts through the development of performing and visual arts experiences. arts2GO tours a variety of programs, with more than half of these incursions happening in regional or remote areas of Victoria and has been doing so for more than 40 years. In 2009, arts2GO reached over 24,000 students in more than 250 schools and community venues statewide.
