Power Hip Hop is back!

Word.

In 2009 eight young hip hop artists, from diverse cultural backgrounds, were mentored by professional jazz, contemporary and classical musicians Donald Bate and Simon Reid. Their task: to create, score and fully orchestrate an exciting 50-minute music program, which was performed with a 12-piece ensemble from the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra to become Power Hip Hop.

These stunning life-filled performances were sold-out, standing ovation affairs, and now the event is being repeated for two days only at the Theatre Royal in Hobart this July!

“Totally transfixing right from the start, these exciting new voices cut across genre, race, class, tradition and stereotype…this music is beautiful, powerful, rythmic, never faltering…
The orchestration ranged from subtle to scintillating, as layer apon layer of strings, brass, wind and percussion combined to build on the simple rhythmns of the Rap.”

Power Hip Hop is the long nurtured and well-honed baby of Kickstart Arts, the culmination of a six- year series of arts projects working with young people in southern Tasmania.

You can catch Power Hip Hop at the Theatre Royal Hobart on Tuesday July 6th at 1.30 pm and Wednesday July 7th at10 am , 11.30 am and 8pm.
Book at the Theatre Royal Box Office.
