QYO Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony

posted Sunday, 1 Aug

To celebrate Gustav Mahler’s 150th birthday, Queensland Youth Symphony will perform his magnificent Second Symphony, the Resurrection, on Saturday 28 August at 7pm in the QPAC Concert Hall.

This major event in Brisbane’s 2010 concert calendar will bring together over 250 leading Brisbane musicians including the 100-member Queensland Youth Symphony conducted by John Curro AM MBE, the combined choirs of the Brisbane Chorale and Queensland Conservatorium Chamber Choir directed by Emily Cox, soprano Judith Henley, mezzo soprano Anne Fulton and organist Christopher Wrench.

Judith Henley, Soprano, performed the major roles for her pitch of voice on opera stages all over the world. Now based in Brisbane, Judith has an extensive recital and concert repertoire which she showcased with many Australian and overseas orchestras.

Anne Fulton, Mezzo Soprano, is a member of Opera Queensland?s Chorus. On the concert platform she has appeared as a soloist in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Europe, the UK, Canada and the USA.

The second symphony is one of Mahler’s outstanding masterpieces, taking the audience on an unforgettable journey through themes of life, death, mourning, lost innocence, reflection on life’s trivialities, and finally a glorious resurrection. In Mahler’s own words, “an overwhelming love lightens our being.”

Conductor John Curro said:

“Great Youth Orchestras thrive on the challenges of Mahler Symphonies. In his magnificent 2nd Symphony, the members of Queensland Youth Symphony find an exhilarating opportunity to show their skill and enthusiasm.“

Queensland Youth Orchestras (QYO) is Australia’s largest state youth orchestra organisation with 480 musicians, aged 8 to 25, in nine orchestras and ensembles. QYO presents concerts at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), at the historic Old Museum Concert Hall and on tours to regional Queensland, interstate and overseas.
