The third production of Sydney Theatre Company’s 2011 Next Stage program is Africa from My Darling Patricia, a company renowned for their unique approach to design and performance. Africa is a work for adults told from the perspective of children, at The Wharf from 1 to 17 September 2011, opening on Friday 2 September.
Inspired by the true story of two German children who attempted to elope, Africa focuses on a young boy and girl who fantasize that the exotic continent offers an escape from Australian suburbia. Featuring bunraku-style puppets, performance, projections and an innovative multi level set design, Africa explores the resilient powers of imagination, fantasy and escape in the lives of children amidst a landscape of broken toys, puppets and sun-faded furniture: a rich imaginative world of ‘squalid mess’ full of dreams and possibilities.
My Darling Patricia have created five productions since the company’s inception in 2003 including Night Garden and the award-winning Politely Savage which played sell-out seasons in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne.
Next Stage, Sydney Theatre Company’s artform development strand presented in Wharf 2
throughout 2011, features the work of emerging artists and cross-artform collaborations, offering distinctly different experiences to the Company’s Main Stage program.
