Urban Myth's biennial Shakespeare season returns with a hysterical and heart-felt tribute to love in all of its guises...Twelfth Night.
This is the story of a girl dressed as a man who is in love with a man who is in love with another girl who is in love with the first man (that's the girl dressed as a man) who ends up with the twin brother of the man who is a girl dressed as a man. Confused? Rightly so - but that's where the fun begins.
Set in a 1920's Gypsy-Jazz Illyria, Urban Myth's Twelfth Night (the company's third production in its biennial Shakespeare seasons), utilises the ever-present talents and energy of its young performers and some of Adelaide's finest theatre makers to bring audiences a beautiful Christmas gift and an event not to be missed.
Audiences will also get to enjoy the talents of local band Chilli Masala. Hot contenders in this year's Triple JJJ Unearthed competition, the Adelaide based pop/indie outfit will be adding some Gypsy Jazz spice to Twelfth Night.
"I wanted to utilise the amazing changes that were happening for the world and especially for women in this period but I also wanted to avoid the cliché 'flapper/Charleston' sounds of the period," said Artistic Director Glenn Hayden.
"Delving deep into the musical history of the 20's, the acting ensemble and I have discovered the magic of the Gypsy Jazz revolution and Chilli Masala are a perfect choice to create the sounds of 'our' Illyria."
Chilli Masala are Izabella Tunis-Notley, Shai Martin, George Thalassoudis and Angus Mason - four talented musicians all under the age of 19. With a mutual love of Jazz and world music, Chilli Masala are bursting with creativity, enthusiasm and social commentary, and will add an exciting layer to Urban Myth's latest production.
Twelfth Night isn't the only exciting event coming up for Urban Myth. In 2011, the company will be celebrating their 30th birthday, marking "30 solid years of assisting exceptionally talented young people in their journey to becoming the new arts leaders of the country."
"Urban Myth is a unique company for the city of Adelaide and its track record of building pathways for young people is evident in the countless professional artists around Australia who once attended workshops here…including newly appointed Patron Hugh Sheridan (of Channel Seven's Packed to the Rafters)," stated Hayden.
Before the birthday celebrations really kick into gear, catch Urban Myth Theatre of Youth and The City of Unley's production of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night at Goodwood Institute Theatre (166A Goodwood Road, Unley Park - opposite the Capri Cinema) from December 2-4.
