Spare Parts Puppet Theatre Celebrates 30th Anniversary

posted Thursday, 1 Sep

Over a million children have seen a Spare Parts Puppet Theatre production since the company was born during an artist-in-residency program initiated by the WA Institute of Technology (now Curtin University of Technology) in 1981.

Over the last 30 years, successive generations of Western Australian children with parents and grandparents in tow have seen the company’s 100+ entertaining and imaginative productions, classics such as Cat Balloon and The Bugalugs Bum Thief and more recent creations such as The Velveteen Rabbit and the award-winning The Arrival.

As part of the year-long celebrations beginning with the new production, Spare Parts is asking for the public's help to remember the special moments in the company's history by sending in the memories of attending a production.

Artistic Director, Philip Mitchell said that the 30th anniversary was a significant moment in the company's remarkable history.

"It's a magical history that began with an idea and then lead to a vibrant company being created that has gone on to charm and excite the imaginations of numerous kids in WA and beyond," he said.

"The company is instrumental in establishing puppetry as [a] major art form in Australia but it's as old as humanity itself. It's longevity is because of its almost magical power to excite our imaginations and to make the unreal real."

A special exhibition of the company's puppets will be on display in the large foyer of its Fremantle home theatre, opposite the Train Station during the school holidays from September 25. Entry is free.
