The Pyjama Girl

posted Tuesday, 1 Dec

She was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Ladykillers dig up memories of the Pyjama Girl...

Known for their beautiful and intriguing performances, Ladykillers, with the support of Adelaide Festival Centre’s inSPACE program and Vitalstatistix Theatre Company, present their new work, The Pyjama Girl from 9-12 and 15-19 December at the Space Theatre.

Inspired by the story of a woman found murdered in country New South Wales in 1934, this
contemporary performance explores identity, fear and the slippery nature of truth. The Pyjama Girl’s loss of identity created a mystique around her; we know nothing of who the Pyjama Girl really was or how she lived, and despite the existence of factual information, there are countless versions of the events surrounding her death. Because of this and the massive public interest in her story, she lives on in our culture.

Ladykillers (known to audiences for their award winning work, Cake) are a team of talented artists: Gaelle Mellis (designer), Ingrid Voorendt (director/choreographer), Astrid Pill (writer/performer) and Zoe Barry (musician/performer).

The idea for the performance came about five years ago and Ladykillers have been fascinated with it ever since. Voorendt says, 'There is a horrifying loneliness to this woman’s story, and somehow her lack of identity had erotic appeal for the public, which we found very disturbing. Ladykillers are exploring what is unknown, rather than what is known, and the repercussions of the story for us as people. In our culture, we are bombarded by images of violence and death, which are often connected in some way to sex. For Ladykillers, The Pyjama Girl is an attempt to answer our own questions around this preoccupation with death and sex, and the distances that can sometimes open up between men and women.'

Audiences can expect a blackly funny yet ultimately provocative and moving performance integrating songs and movement.
