My Super Single Mum is the first in a children’s book series titled ‘My Family’ by author Bronny Fallens and illustrator Muntsa Vicente. The series was created to provide children with stories about alternative family situations. The next two titles will be My Two Dads, on bookshelves around Father’s Day in September, 2011, and My Groovy Gran, out by December, 2011.
Gone are the days of a typical Australian family consisting of a mum, dad and 2.5 children, as around 20% of families are defined as "run by a single mother."
As a single parent herself, Bronny created the book because she was unable to find any children’s stories that her child could relate to. She also wanted to empower single mums and reinforce that the job they are doing is ‘super’ and ‘valued.’
"[This book is] written to help kids in her situation, and its fabulous," says Mel Doyle from Sunrise (Channel 7).
The book also hopes to ‘normalise and value families of all variations and help children understand the variety of families in Australia.
My Super Single Mum is aimed at 0-7 aged children and was written to communicate that it’s not what you spend on a child, rather the time you spend with them - all children need is to feel loved, safe and secure. The values imparted in this story is that it doesn’t matter the makeup of your family; there are families of different shapes and sizes, one parent or two!
