With the National Curriculum high on the agenda of Australian educators, it was interesting to hear Sir Ken Robinson, one of the world’s leading advocates of creative education, interviewed on The 7.30 Report on ABC TV recently (June 16 and 17).
In an in–depth interview, Robinson eruditely and entertainingly outlined the problems and challenges facing most Western education systems. He claimed they were driven by economic imperatives rather than the individual needs and talents of students and teachers. Robinson also argued that current education systems are still founded on outdated industrial revolution models that prioritise science and maths over arts and humanities.
