Felicity, who lives in Sydney's inner west, is one of 34 members of The Sydney Conservatorium of Music's Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Imre Palló, embarking on an unprecedented concert tour of the US over the next two weeks.

"What I love about this instrument are the many centuries of history associated with it…just a huge bank of playing styles, compositions, performers and directions to get happily lost in," comments the fourth year student at The Con.

"Just so much music to explore and choose from, as well as challenges to take on – from trying obscure repertoires to outdated techniques. I never get bored with the violin."

The orchestra will join forces with an equal number of American students for performances of American and Australian compositions in New York, San Francisco and Boulder, Colorado. The New York concert at the Lincoln Center will be an historic collaboration with the esteemed Juilliard School.

Doukakis will be visiting the US for the first time, but gained more than an inkling of what to expect earlier this year as a member of The Con Symphony Orchestra's tour of Germany, playing at Stuttgart's "Europe Day" and as resident orchestra at the Bronnbach festival, receiving standing ovations and positive media reviews.

"I'm looking forward to learning new ideas in America and tapping into a new vein of inspirations," she said.

"It will be nerve wracking, but books and movies are my way of staying calm. Hopefully a show on Broadway as well."

Doukakis hails from a family devoted to music. Her parents are big fans of all genres, while her older brother is a drummer in a band that has played with Cold Play in the UK and her younger sister plays the viola in her secondary school band.

"This unprecedented cultural and educational link provides a vivid illustration of the special relationship between the two nations," commented Dean and Principal, Professor Kim Walker.

"It is a unique opportunity to celebrate the alliance through young virtuosos of both Australia and the USA. Significantly, the fusion of these outstanding students will perform modern American music by William Schuman and modern Australian music by Richard Mills."

The US concert tour kicked off on October 18 at the Lincoln Center, New York and finishes up on October 26 at the College of Music, University of Colorado in Boulder.
