At The Drive-In is a unique production incorporating performance, music, dance, film and social commentary, that promotes an exchange between young people from metropolitan and rural areas.

Writer Tim Spencer, Shopfront Artistic Director TJ Eckleberg, Outreach Director, Sarah Emery, as well as a comprehensive and highly-talented creative team are supporting the young collaborators, along with project partners Shopfront Contemporary Arts, West Darling Arts, Heaps Decent, Barkly Arts (NT), Hazelhurst Galleries and the Broken Hill community.

Young people will travel from Sydney, rural New South Wales and as far as Tennant Creek, NT, to participate in the final performance in Broken Hill in September, which also aims to encourage community involvement and interaction.

At The Drive-In features a combination of story and real events in the lives of young people to explore what affects us and how we affect the world. As a virus ravages the city, turning people into zombies. The only way to stop the living-dead is decapitation or a quick shot to the head... Scientists work tirelessly to develop a cure; while office workers desperately try to hide the onset of symptoms from clients and friends.

City and country kids, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, including emerging artists and first-time performers, will come together in this multi-faceted show.

Shopfront Artistic Director, TJ Eckleberg, said, “Young people face ‘zombies’ everyday – from issues with parents and friends, to dealing with who they want to be, and how they want to relate to their world ... We’re excited by the project, and look forward to a memorable community event.”

At The Drive-In plays at Hazelhurst Galleries, Gymea, 26-29 August, and then in Broken Hill, 10-11 September.

You can find out more about the project at the Shopfront website or the Hazelhurst Galleries website.
