Boom! Bap! Pow! The Red Tree has music!

posted Wednesday, 1 Jun

Barking Gecko’s adaptation of Shaun Tan’s The Red Tree started rehearsals this week, with members of WAMI Award Winning band Boom! Bap! Pow! providing a live gritty and original soundtrack.

“Given the bold imagery of Shaun Tan’s The Red Tree we saw the need to create a show that expresses the emotion of Shaun’s book apart from it’s stunning visual imagery. Our search for a live musical soundtrack that could enhance the theatre experience brought us to three members of local outfit Boom! Bap! Pow!” says Barking Gecko’s Artistic Director John Sheedy.

Utilising industrial makeshift instruments, Boom! Bap! Pow! members Clint Bracknell, Dylan Hooper and David Salvaire have created an original soundtrack for The Red Tree that follows it’s central character, the little girl, on her journey.

“We are really excited to be a part of The Red Tree. Creating for an audience of young people the experience provides an opportunity to explore the importance of music within theatre,” says Clint Bracknell of Boom! Bap! Pow!,

”The collaboration process has been productive and we are looking forward to bringing our unique sound to the show.”

Barking Gecko presents the magic of Shaun Tan’s The Red Tree during the July school holidays.

Audiences will be transported to a strange world of peculiar creatures and dream-like landscapes. A young girl, having a bad day, navigates a curious and unfamiliar world, followed by a single red leaf - a reminder of hope, resilience and inspiration.

Join our friend as she travels across the pages, accompanied by her constant companions who create a live soundtrack for her bold journey.
