ARRIBA LA REVOLUCION! The Hola Mexico Film Festival Comes to Adelaide

posted Tuesday, 1 Dec

One of Australia’s biggest foreign film celebrations - the Hola Mexico Film Festival – makes its way
to Adelaide in December as part of a six city, nationwide tour and this year’s line-up looks every bit
as enticing as 2008’s sell-out event!

The festival hits Adelaide from 4-9 December with a dynamic program showcasing the diversity of
Mexican contemporary life through an irresistible mix of drama, documentary and even family films.
The action starts Friday Dec 4 with the vibrant *Opening Night Fiesta (see below for details) and the
screening of Sin Nombre – winner of the Best Director and Best Cinematography at the 2009
Sundance Film Festival. This visually stunning film follows the journey of a beautiful young Honduran
woman who – seeking a new life – joins her father and uncle on an odyssey across the Latin
American countryside en route to the US.

There’s a triple serving of cinema on Saturday Dec 5 & Sunday Dec 6. Saturday’s program kicks off
with a session of short films, followed by the evocative Arrancame La Vida (Tear This Heart Out)
– based on the novel by Angeles Mastretta and set against the backdrop of post-revolution Mexico in
the 1930s & ‘40s.

Sunday’s triple feature is a diverse mix. Fresh from the Melbourne International Film Festival and a screening at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival is Los Bastardos (The Bastards) portraying one action-packed day in the life of two illegal immigrants in the US.

Also on Sunday’s bill is one the whole family can enjoy - Otra Pelicula De Nuevos Y Un Pollo (Another Egg Movie and a Chicken). Full of double entendres in Spanish (for the big kids), this is a delightful animation
about the adventures of Toto, a full grown chicken, and his friends Willy & Bibi.

Other program highlights include the moving documentary Los Herederos (The Inheritors) – a portrait of the lives of young children working in the Mexican countryside, struggling to survive – and the must-see comedy Conozca La Cabeza De Juan Perez (Meet Juan Perez’s Head) about magician Juan Perez who tries to revive the glory of a fading and not-so-typical Mexican circus.

So strap on your sombrero, polish up your Spanish and head for the Mercury Cinema from December
4-9 for a feast of Mexican humour, drama and reality.

Tickets to most sessions are: $14.50 full or $12.50 conc EXCEPT the *Opening Night Fiesta on Fri
Dec 4 – where tickets are $25 each. Tickets can be purchased from the MRC Ph: (08) 8410 0979 or the
Mercury Cinema box-office. For full screening info visit www.mercurycinema.org.au The Mercury
