The Festival of Broadway is a musical theatre event unlike any seen, or heard, in the Southern
Hemisphere.
Created through shared ideas of Michael A. Kerker (Director of Musical Theatre, ASCAP) and Australian Musical Director Kevin Purcell (Head, Conservatorium of Music at UTAS) the Festival
celebrates the American stage musical, by bringing together industry leaders with budding
Broadway aspirants in a mix of concerts, masterclasses, forums and the world-renowned ASCAP
musical theatre writing workshop directed by Stephen Schwartz.
The now-annual festival has previously hosted Lynn Ahrens (lyricist) & Stephen Flaherty
(composer) in 2009, and this year celebrates the stellar career of composer/lyricist Stephen
Schwartz (Godspell, Wicked). Renowned Emmy Award-winning Actress, singer and recording
artist, Liz Callaway, and celebrated New York-based singer, Michael Rose, will join Stephen
Schwartz on stage.
During the 2010 Festival of Broadway the inaugural UTAS Stephen Schwartz Songwriting Award
will be presented to an Australian contemporary songwriter.
This new prestigious Award valued at $10,000 is being offered to advance the career of an
emerging individual songwriter or song writing team. In addition to the award, second and third
runners up will be gifted $1500 and $500 respectively.
Stephen Schwartz will present the Award at the Festival of Broadway concert, An Evening with
Stephen Schwartz, in Sydney on June 20 during the 2010 APRA Song Summit.
During this concert, the ARIA nominated Southern Gospel Choir (Dir. Andrew Legg) will perform
the Award-Winner’s song in front of an audience that include prominent Australian music
industry representatives.
This Award will offer the recipient the opportunity to build networks with the world’s finest
composers of musical theatre, hear their work performed by some of Australia’s best musicians
and financial assistance toward further career development.
The UTAS Stephen Schwartz Songwriting Award is sponsored by the University of Tasmania,
Conservatorium of Music.
