This August, Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy will be dynamically re-imagined (minus Leonardo Dicaprio) on the Dunstan Playhouse stage.
This classic tale of star-crossed lovers has been a cornerstone of the theatre since it was first performed in 1595, undergoing countless reinventions and connecting with millions around the world.
“They don’t come much bigger than Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare’s examination of love, lust and obsession is timeless and a wonderful challenge for any director,” said Director Geordie Brookman.
“I am particularly excited by the opportunity to re-imagine the piece somewhat: Shakespeare’s writing is so strong that it stands up wonderfully to experimentation.”
“Edward Hall’s Propeller Company in the UK has become famous for lightning fast, re-imagined Shakespeare and this style will be our jumping off point.”
Just in case you've spent your life living under a rock, Romeo and Juliet held the market on star-crossed love affairs centuries before some wet flannel of a girl fell for a glittery vampire.
Today, Romeo and Juliet’s doomed love and their warring families inspire us to examine why and how we love, and the lengths to which we are willing to go to get what we want.
Featuring 6 actors, 18 characters and all kinds of forbidden love, this is Shakespeare through the looking glass; a world in which identities shift in the blink of an eye; where text, music and image collide to reveal Shakespeare’s masterpiece in a brand new light.
The State Theatre Company's production of romeo&juliet features the talents of Geordie Brookman (Director), Pip Runciman (Designer), Geoff Cobham (Lighting Designer) and Andrew Howard (Composer and Sound Designer), with a cast including Michaela Cantwell, Thomas Conroy, Terence Crawford, Mark Saturno, Roman Vaculik, Josephine Were.
