One of Western Australia’s unique theatrical treasures, The Turtle and the Trade Winds will make its way to Western Australian shores again with a special season at Deckchair Theatre from August 18 to September 3.

Presented as part of Deckchair Theatre’s Umbrella program, this new production capitalises on the
larger venue of Victoria Hall to enhance the show’s acclaimed, exquisite imagery.

Written and directed by Sandy McKendrick, The Turtle and the Trade Winds is an enchanting story about a
sea turtle’s travels between North West Australia and our closest neighbour, Indonesia. The 45 minute show
is performed by McKendrick and fellow puppeteers and dancers, Katya Shevtsov and Simon Stewart in a
kaleidoscopic fusion of puppetry, dance, storytelling, and exquisite imagery with original music and songs
created by both northern indigenous coastal communities and Fremantle musicians.

The enchanting story is told through the eyes of an elderly Indonesian woman, a young indigenous man and
an inquisitive child who are fascinated by the wandering turtle as it moves between the two countries,
returning each year to lay its eggs and start the cycle again.

Writer and Director, Sandy McKendrick said that it is a moving and sensitive portrayal of thousands of years
of engagement between the indigenous peoples of northern Australia and Indonesia.

“Literally, on the back of a turtle, The Turtle and the Trade Winds takes us on a dreamy cross-cultural journey exploring the ancient ties between Indonesia and Australia,” she said.

“The poetic nature of the performance touches our most innocent childlike hearts and with its powerful conservation message, makes it an enriching cultural experience for all ages. It’s perfect for grandparents, parents and children to enjoy together.”

First performed at WA Maritime Museum, the production has gone on its own journey with presentations in
East Java, Bali, the Cocos-Keeling and Christmas islands.

This special season at Deckchair Theatre in Fremantle runs from August 18 to September 3 with evening and daytime performances.
