Urban Myth Theatre of Youth has been creating theatre and encouraging youth participation in the arts for 30 years - and it’s time to celebrate!
Artistic Director, Glenn Hayden has programmed a year-long exploration of Urban Myth’s rich history, showcasing some of the best young talent in South Australia and the “greatest hits” of this leading youth arts organisation.
“2011 is a celebration of Urban Myth’s history as a much-loved hub for the development of young people as artists, as productive and valuable community members and as leaders
in their own right”, says Hayden.
Joining Glenn at the helm is Urban Myth’s new General Manager, Hayley Horton. An alumnus of youth theatre herself, Hayley has gathered experience from the wider Adelaide arts industry, most recently with the Australia Business Arts Foundation and State Theatre Company SA.
“It’s such a wonderful time to join the Urban Myth team – there is a wealth of stories to tell from our history and we are looking forward to a bright future with new projects that push the boundaries of youth theatre”, comments Horton.
A comprehensive program of workshops has been scheduled for 2011.
- Adelaide Fringe production Also a Mirror in March.
- The 6th instalment of Out of the Boot for emerging writers and artists and a school holiday re-mount of the international hit The Pirate’s Ship in July.
- Absurdist double-bill Out at Sea/Striptease by Slawomir Mrozek in September.
- A main-stage new work, The Girl Who Was 100 Girls by renowned South Australian playwright and once an Urban Myth member, Finegan Kruckemeyer (Man Covets Bird, The Tragical Life of Cheeseboy) in October.
Patron and Urban Myth alumnus, Hugh Sheridan (Packed to the Rafters) will join in the celebrations, which will culminate in a special 30th Birthday Art Auction in late September featuring live performances and reunion of Urban Myth Theatre of Youth and Unley Youth Theatre alumni.
