Advanced Screening 2010
Presented at Brisbane Powerhouse by Markwell Presents
A Cinematic Theatre event: fusing live performance and the magic of the big screen
A visually stunning cinematic theatre performance for young people that tells the story of young love, passion and coming of age for the Y generation.
Advanced Screening is a romantic comedy/drama written specifically for teenagers about the problems that arise when young inexperienced people are in serious relationships. The narrative is a fast paced episode based story revolving around a group of friends in year 12 on the verge of finishing school and dealing with the pressure of the future and their relationships after school. The production explores these issues by presenting the characters as they move through a range of awkward and confronting situations that will not only entertain, but also cause young audiences to reflect on their own experiences and choices.
A cast of 10 young live drama performers will be selected from hundreds of Brisbane high school students who will audition in a massive 11 hour day at the Brisbane Powerhouse on Sunday May 2nd. Over the next 10 weeks the ten talented young performers will receive valuable real work experience, working with the dynamic youth theatre company Markwell Presents. They will soon be launched into the world of film and theatre performance as they present a 2 week season in July at the Visy Theatre. Another 20 auditionees will be chosen to participate in the green screen film shoot as extras, gaining great film experience and an opportunity to see themselves on the big screen.
This will be an opportunity for drama students to see and study cinematic theatre at it’s visually stunning best. As part of the 2 week season we will be running discussions and workshops in the venue, where we will unpack the themes of the play and the making of the cinematic sequences, call (07) 3849 8592 for more information.
Markwell Presents Showreel 09
A little about us
Since 2002 Markwell Presents has written 7 Cinematic Theatre plays for young people that integrate visual
projection and live performance. Markwell Presents have directed and produced 12 seasons of their own plays and also worked with La Boite Theatre Co, Qld Theatre Co and Zen Zen Zo to design and integrate visual sequences into their main stage performances.
Cinematic Theatre can be briefly described as a fusion of live performance and the magic of the big screen, it is a contemporary style of drama that combines pre-edited vision sequences projected onto screens and surfaces with stage performance.
The integrated use of projection during stage scenes andscene transitions allows the live action to become continuous, therefore creating a suspension of disbelief that engages the audience. In the ever increasing technological environment, contemporary audiences are accustomed to information and story telling being brought to them through visual images and screens.
To accompany our Cinematic Theatre style we have devised a comprehensive creative rationale that we teach to educators and students using the conventions and elements that we utilise to produce our work. Markwell Presents provide positive learning experiences for secondary students in drama, and film studies. We offer an extensive range of support services for drama and media teachers including professional development workshops, artist in residence programs, in class curriculum based workshops, original texts
and DVDs.
Since 2004 Markwell Presents have delivered over 40 Artist in Residence programs in schools and government arts projects, presented over 120 in class Workshops in schools and institutions, sold over 600 script texts to 66 schools and produced DVD's of the live performances of Advanced
Screening and What Simon Said that include educational extra features.
