Southern Edge Arts

The Colour of Forgetting

22-24 July 2010

SEA’s 25th Anniversary Celebration Project!

The Colour of Forgetting is a physical theatre and circus performance inspired by local events and stories, set in and around the Albany Port. It explores the themes of isolation, exile and acceptance through the story of a crippled boat seeking shelter in a foreign harbour and how the locals respond. A young girl stretches the boundaries of her new-found independence beyond the comfort of her guardian, the Harbour Master – a man locked in the past, dwelling on the dangers ever present whiles growing up and ignoring the importance of being able to learn from one’s own mistakes.

The Colour of Forgetting will employ illusion, movement, circus, animation and puppetry to create a visually intoxicating show that will delight audiences of all ages. Participants will work alongside local and nationally renowned professional artists to achieve a high quality artistic outcome.

Festy Shorts – A festival of Short Plays

19-28 March 2010

A Festival of Short Plays celebrating young voices!

Kicking off the year for Southern Edge Arts is Festy Shorts – a Festival of Short Plays that celebrates young voices. Emerging from our 2009 project SpringBoard, where young writers worked with Sydney based playwright, Mary Rachel Brown, to create several unique scripts, Festy Shorts is an opportunity for teams of young people to become involved and take up the challenge of directing, designing and producing their original works by forming their own small companies.

Participants will have guidance from theatre professionals, who will run introductory workshops in specialised fields (directing, designing, lighting etc), share the benefits of their professional experiences and then continue to act as creative consultants and mentors, providing advice and/or assistance where it is required.

In addition to the new works, a highlight of the festival will be the inclusion of emerging Perth artist Tim Watt’s underwater odyssey, The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer, presented by Perth Theatre Company.

Murder by the SEA – In partnership with Buzz Dance Theatre

Creative Development Workshops April 12-16 and September 28 – October 6 2010. Performance season October 7-9 2010.

A collaboration with Buzz Dance Theatre which explores the dreariness of Albany’s winter and the teenage tendency towards the macabre!

Inspired by the dreariness of Albany’s winter and the teenage tendency towards the macabre, SEA will work in collaboration with Buzz Dance Theatre over two residencies to create an original detective story performance.

The first residency (April 12-16) will focus on improvisation, task workshopping, and phrase development combining the motif of stormy weather and its effects of the psyche of local residents, with the theme of murder, crime, suicide and ghosts. The second residency (Sept 28 – Oct 9) will culminate in the development of an original work to be performed in Albany and then toured to King St Art Centre in Perth to coincide with the Awesome Festival in November!
