Southern Youth Theatre Ensemble (SYTE)

To be a leader of innovative and diverse theatre performance driven by young people from metropolitan and regional communities

Party House on Tour

February 2nd - March 2nd

Due to popular demand, the 2009 Adelaide Fringe production ‘Party House’ is off to tour schools on the Fleurieu. You’re invited to experience the partying, the drinking and the excitement of this house party!!

Originally set in a Real House with the audience traveling from room to room of the party meeting the characters, the situations, the problems, SYTE brings to the Fleurieu Peninsula a new and improved production…

PARTY HOUSE…On Tour

This is going to be the biggest in school party ever!

Using Augusto Boal's Forum Theatre or ‘theatre of the oppressed’ seven young people and the director created the party scenes through exploration and improvisation around the issues facing the community (the young people in the cast). The audience will watch the party unfold, and will then be invited into the party the second time it is performed. Together, we work as a community to try to find alternative actions and strategies to deal with these problems in a safe but realistic environment.

The aim of forum is to discover ways of dealing with the situation as a group…. Because in the end, it is our problem as a community.

Retaliation

27-31 July 2010

Too much for your console, bigger than your TV and louder than your surround sound.

SYTE, in partnership with IMPACT is embarking on something very new and very exciting… a musical: Retaliation.

A large-scale musical production using the topical environment of a computer game, to focus on real world violence verses the inability to understand how conflict affects another person. Young people from all over the southern suburbs have been involved in all aspects of the production, including writing, acting and music.

Emerging writer Alex Vickery-Howe (Once Upon a Midnight 2008), the SYTE ensemble and participants from schools in the local area have collaboratively writen the script.

The young people had input into the narrative. Their stories and experiences have influenced the subject matter and the characters based on their own physicalisation. The SYTE membership have been exploring and understanding non-violence over the past two years through the IMPACT partnership and will bring this knowledge and experience with them to these sessions. Throughout the creative development, the creative crew (writer, director, composer, digital artist and mentee) have collated and discussed the material generated from the Retaliation Ensemble with the IMPACT agency steering committee.

This incredible opportunity sees the young people at SYTE develop skills in a new art form that includes singing, choreography and character development. The Retaliation ensemble will always have the opportunity to feed input into the production, and thus have ownership over the final script and musical composition. They will be viewed as the experts in the subject matter, as they are part of the community that we, the partnerships, are trying to reach.
