Houston, we’ve had a problem…
Trapped 200,000 miles away from Earth, three astronauts fight for their lives. An explosion has ripped through their space craft, and they are running out of oxygen, power and hope. The staff of America’s Space Agency are desperately trying to find ways to bring the ship home.

Become a member of Mission Control and let Flight Director, Gene Kranz, lead you on your mission to bring these three heroes home. Inside a detailed replica of the 1970 space administration control room, you will be given the opportunity to interact with the Astronauts and staff. Sit in the console seats or as a member of the Press Gallery and watch one of the greatest survival stories of the twentieth century unfold.
 

The Voyage

The Voyage is an uplifting affirmation and celebration of the wonderment of life.’ Lowdown, Australia

Kijimuna Dance and Music Troupe celebrate the joyous lives of the Okinawan people using the movements of this region’s classical dance. Seven dancers and three musicians transform, scene by scene, into traditional characters, from fishermen to farmers to royalty.

Beautiful costumes and choreography combine with the traditional sounds of the Sanshin (an Okinawan stringed instrument), Chinese violin, flute and drum, in an interactive mosaic of song and dance.
The Voyage shows the Okinawan way of living, their unique cultural beliefs, as well as their willingness to understand and appreciate other ways of life. The dance, Michi-nu-ura, celebrates the happiness of living the same day, in the same moment together.

Helena and the Journey of the Hello

A wily wolf, a cheeky fox and a sweet hare narrate the tale of Helena Bugosi, a young girl whose mother lives in a phone! The production beautifully combines puppetry, live music, song and an inventive use of mobile phones to portray Helena as she navigates her way through difficult times.


 

Terrapin Puppet Theatre’s enchanting new work is characterised by extraordinary visual design that weaves the audience through the thicket of stories about Helena, her father the opera singer, and her mother who lives in a phone. Helena and the Journey of the Hello is a beautifully staged and moving story in the fairytale style of old.

Echoa

Infectious, inventive and utterly unique, Echoa blurs the line between music and movement. Imagination meets possibility, where anything can be an instrument and everyone can dance.

Two dancers and two percussionists explore how music and choreography work together. Musicians dance and dancers play as they build up one wall of sound after another, using instruments, drums, bars and each other's bodies.

This charismatic group of performers seize the stage with an electrifying blend of movement and vivacious Latin music. The energy on stage will amaze, inspire, and have everyone laughing out loud.

Little Big Shots

The international children’s film festival returns to Sydney Opera House in 2010 with a brand new crop of films, featuring international shorts, animations and documentaries.

Presenting ‘reel’ stories for kids, about kids, and some even by kids, Little Big Shots creates movie magic for mini moguls, giving them the gifts of curiosity, imagination and tolerance. Featuring films that span all genres from animation to action, Little Big Shots inspires discussion of world cultures and language.

Full program details for the New South Wales premiere season will be available on the Sydney Opera House website from early in 2010.

The darkest of The Brothers Grimm fairytales is brought to hair-raising life in this enchanting tale of hunger and fright. Accompanied by an onstage musician, the narrator seamlessly transitions between the characters of Hansel, Gretel and the evil witch as she magically illustrates the tale using light and projections.

Storytelling and stunning visuals combine to result in one of the most inspiring theatre events of the year. Gruppe 38’s inventive reworking of this age-old tale can only be described as breathtaking and delightfully imaginative.

Babies Proms: Music Book

Come and celebrate award-winning children’s books, storytelling and music with the return of this annual Babies Proms event.

Coinciding with Children’s Book Week, the Babies Proms Orchestra performs an engaging repertoire incorporating new stories and some well-loved Australian favourites. Set in a relaxed environment, Music Book introduces children to the joys of live music coupled with their much-loved stories illustrated on screen.

When His Watch Stopped

Sadari Theatre Company’s When His Watch Stopped Working compassionately confronts the difficult theme of war.

Using masked performance, mime and imagery, it tells the heart-wrenching story of a young couple in war-stricken Korea, struggling through traumatic times and dealing with love, loss, and the very personal price of war.

Approaching the subject from the perspective of a child’s understanding, the production addresses the reality of the subject with superb theatrical ability and interpretation.

When His Watch Stopped Working is a visually powerful production that encourages discussion and gently addresses the anxiety, fear and hope of children affected by war. The finale is one of the most genuinely moving moments of hope you will experience this year.

Saltbush – Children’s Cheering Carpet

Saltbush is an interactive journey through Aboriginal culture, celebrated through dance, music, song and stories. This new work by the internationally acclaimed Italian company Compagnia TPO has been developed in collaboration with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians.

Saltbush poetically explores our shared relationship to the Australian natural landscape and the stories which emerge from a diverse people. Performed on a touch-sensitive carpet that triggers images and sound, the production centres on the journey of two friends as they cross the diverse Australian landscape.

Interactive technology, exquisite choreography and Indigenous music combine to create a visually beautiful journey. Children are invited to explore and dance with the performers as the landscape unfolds around them. A joyous cultural experience that will stay with you long after the performance.
