Premiere on the 5th of February
On the evening of 5 February 2010, Hoyts Cinema in Woden, Canberra, hosted the premiere of the feature-length film Another Day in Paradise, written and directed by ACT film maker Paramita Roy. The film is set in Canberra, Australia and Kolkata, India and concerns three teachers who respond differently to their stressful and dangerous workplace.
Sasha Robinson, played by Hannah Cormick, has to confront violence in the school-yard. Christina Popescu played by Melanie Faris battles with depression as she attempts to juggle the demands of unruly students at work and demanding children at home. Ravi Saha, played by Rubik Roy, who has just completed a teaching degree, has been unsuccessful in securing work in Kolkata. He subsequently returns to Australia where he is employed in a secondary school where he shares an office with Sasha and Christina. Ravi learns that Australia does not offer the rewards for which he initially hoped and so returns to India where he enjoys fulfilment from volunteering as a teacher in the slums of Kolkatha.
Significant members of the support cast include a group of young Canberra actors aged between 15 and 19 years whose notable performances as disorderly school students provide the necessary tension in the film. The Indian contingent includes the work of veteran Indian actor Sunil Sarkar as well as camera work by Subhankar Bhar, sound by Arpan Kayet and Joy…
