In the Public Domain

In the public domain is a series of free dance performances, devised collaboratively by some of Australia’s most exciting young dance artists, and performed live on locations throughout the NewActon precinct in Canberra.

Presented by QL2 Centre for Youth Dance (Canberra, Australia) in partnership with New Acton, these performances are the result of a four-week process entitled Soft Landing, aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of recent graduates from Australia’s finest tertiary training institutions.

The Soft Landing mentoring program (at the QL2 Centre for Youth Dance) has given eight tertiary dance graduates the opportunity to enrich and expand their experiences in choreography, specifically focussing on “the choreographer in group-devised work”. Choreographer/dancers Alison Plevey, Ashley Berry, Quindell Orton, Emiline Forster, Leeke Griffin, Carly Armstrong, Ashlee Barton and Lenka Hughes have toiled hard under the guidance of project leader Brian Lucas and his assistant Laura Boynes to produce the works of In the public domain.

As the chill of Winter moves towards the warmth of Spring, rug up and come along on a guided journey through the NewActon precinct. In the commercial and public spaces of the development, dancers will present site-specific works which will allow audiences to see the architecture and environment of NewActon through fresh eyes. Exploring the themes of public and private behaviour, these performances will provide exciting contemporary dance pieces in which audiences will recognise themselves, and in which we they will see reflections of lives lived “In The Public Domain”.

The hour-long performances take place at 10.30am and 1pm on Friday 10, Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 September. Audiences are asked to assemble outside UrbanFood Store + Cafe (cnr of Marcus Clarke St and Edinburg Ave)

As the evening rolls in, escape to the warm and welcoming indoor spaces of NewActon and prepare to be surprised and entertained as the young artists from QL2 animate the precinct in unexpected and entertaining ways. Wander through the foyer of the Diamant Hotel, on into the restaurants and bars, and come face-to-face with live dance installations and physical imagery designed to enhance your experience of these dynamic public spaces. Watch as much or as little as you choose - and then why not stay on for a drink or a meal to round off the evening?

Evening performances take place on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 September from 7pm.

Performances are free.
