The talented songstress
Georgia Germein played to a full house at the Promethean. The seating was cabaret style, with tables and chairs complemented by velvet cushions and mood lighting. It set a comfortable atmosphere; an apt venue to complement the performance.
Georgia Germein is extremely talented, and has established herself at a young age as a confident and practiced artist. Switching between acoustic and electric guitar and grand piano, Germein’s talents are accompanied by her equally gifted and gorgeous sisters, Clara on drums and vocals and Ella on bass, keyboard and vocals. This definitely is a family of young talents. Their chemistry on stage is clear, and slide from one song to the next seamlessly, always keeping the audience engaged and entertained. Germein’s style is soulful and her music and voice is reminiscent of The Cranberries/Angus & Julia Stone.
Germein offers information on some of her pieces, introducing them in context as to why she wrote them and what they are about. Adding some illumination on the songs was valuable to gaining a personal connection with the artist and the music, with a better understanding of Germein’s accomplishments. She explained to the audience that last year was filled with travelling, as she visited Nepal as World Vision’s Youth Ambassador and returned to speak in schools in NSW, VIC and SA about her experience; went to Africa as part of the Kalahari Experience to teach underprivileged high school students; and toured Malaysia on a music tour.
It is clear Germein is well travelled and has gained much life experience from this, and it is clear, too that this comes through her music. She has written her own songs – instrumental and lyrics – and the delicate, emotional and whimsical music is a clear indication of her maturity and dedication. The songs she performed are from her debut album, Take My Hand and each one is an emotional tribute to Germein’s life experiences. They are a combination of her social observations and personal experiences and this is what speaks deeply to the audience.
The theme of heart and home is followed across the entire album and in Germein’s explanations we learn just what these are. One song has been dedicated to her mother to comfort her while travelling abroad; another concerns the African children she worked with and not letting people forget them; and gives a voice to the disadvantaged children of Nepal, the words are what they might say if they were given a voice. It is sometimes confronting, but in a good way and the soulful, melodic sound moves you almost to tears. Germein’s social mind still looks to the future. She intends to tour the Northern Territory to remote communities and have Aboriginal artists support the performance.
This is one performance that comes with a message. Everyone in the audience will no doubt leave feeling a little more consciously and emotionally awakened.
